He is an associate professor of War Studies and Modern History at the University of Amsterdam (UvA). He pursued his studies in Leiden, Paris, and Oxford, and has held fellowships at Trinity College Dublin, Oxford University, and the European University Institute. Trained as a historian (PhD, 2011), his work is shaped by insights from political, social, and economic sciences, as well as war and strategic studies and digital humanities. Deeply interdisciplinary, his research explores conflict, conflict resolution, and resilience to shocks and crises in modern Europe and beyond with particular foci on occupations during the First and Second World Wars, the blurred boundaries of conflict, foreign fighting in the 20th and 21st centuries (including in Ukraine), and the impact of sanctions and economic blockades throughout the 20th century. Kruizinga (co-)authored numerous books and articles and has (co-)edited volumes and special journal issues. His work has been published in multiple languages, including English, French, German, Czech, and Chinese, and has appeared in leading academic journals such as European Review of History, War in History, European History Quarterly, Contemporary European History, and The International History Review.
