He is Professor of International History and Security at Lancaster University; a Research Fellow at the Department of Military History, Faculty of Military Science, Stellenbosch University; and a Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Commonwealth Studies, School of Advanced Study, University of London. He previously held a range of positions at ETH Zurich, the Universities of Chichester, Lausanne, and the Free State, and the Leibniz Institute of European History in Mainz, and held visiting professorships at Sciences Po Lille and Sciences Po Aix. His research focuses on the Cold War, military assistance, postcolonial security in Africa, as well as security and defence in Africa and Europe. Marco gained his PhD in Politics and International Relations, as well as in History, from the Universities of Nottingham and Neuchâtel. He is the editor of the International Journal of Military History and Historiography and co-edits the book series ‘New Perspectives on the Cold War’ (Brill). He is, among others, the author of Arms Transfers, Neutrality and Britain’s Role in the Cold War (Brill, 2013) and co-editor of Peacekeeping in Africa: The Evolving Security Architecture (Routledge, 2014), Neutrality and Neutralism in the Global Cold War: Between or Within the Blocs?
