He is a historian of modern Europe specializing in Spain and a teacher of the humanities. In his research, he studies how the cultures of military institutions in Europe helped to influence the course of the continent’s violent conflicts from 1914-1945 and contributed to the fall of interwar democratic regimes. Him research applies ideas of organizational culture from the fields of sociology and business to understand the military and police cultures of Europe's forces of public order. In so doing, his work establishes continuities between nineteenth-century liberal notions of professionalism, imperialism, and public order and the brutal practices of Europe’s militarized institutions in the first half of the twentieth century.
