He studied History and Philosophy in Trinity College Dublin, where I also concluded my PhD in History. I joined NUI Maynooth in 1997/8. He have published widely in aspects of contemporary Portuguese and Spanish history. In 2005/6 I was a Senior Visiting Fellow at the Instituto de Ciências Sociais, in the University of Lisbon, the 2012/2013 FLAD/Brown Michael Teague Visiting Professor of Portuguese and Brazilian Studies at Brown University, and a Visiting Fellow at the Keough-Naughton Institute for Irish Studies at the University of Notre Dame in 2024. He was elected to the Royal Irish Academy in 2017.
He is interested in contemporary Portuguese and Spanish history; the First World War and its effects; and diplomatic history in general. He published a biography of António de Oliveira Salazar, which was translated into Portuguese, being published in both Portugal and Brazil. He was the recipient of two major IRCHSS fellowships, the first in 2005-06 and the second in 2011-12. He is currently leading a project aimed at collecting, translating, editing and eventually publishing foreign diplomatic documentation about Ireland in the 20th Century.
